The Arkansas Statewide Family Literacy Initiative allows state agencies, with both state and federal resources, to provide a multiplicity of services for pre-school children and their families. Adult education and family literacy are regarded as essential for developing a stronger workforce in the state and for preparing children to enter school ready to learn.

The Arkansas Statewide Family Literacy Initiative is funded by a grant from the U. S. Department of Education. This endeavor seeks to create a partnership of service providers and advocate training for schools, community service providers and agencies, in order to provide quality services for families.

Family Literacy Services are services provided to participants on a voluntary basis that are of sufficient intensity and duration to make sustainable changes in a family, and integrate the four (4) components.

Family Literacy consists of four (4) components:

  • Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children
  • Parents practice their skills in support of their child's education, with guidance readily available from the classroom teacher. It allows the parent to take part in their child's education in a more active way.

  • Training for parents regarding role as first teacher
  • Parent Time is an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss and learn about how the school system works. This time will also help them understand how they can best support their children's education.

  • Parent literacy training
  • The adult education component in family literacy offers instruction in literacy, English language skills and vocational skills. Adult education instruction centers around the adult learners' individual goals and builds on their individual strengths.

  • Age-appropriate education for children

The integration of the children's education component with the other components help parents to understand what their children are learning and how they are learning. It will better equip parents to support that learning in the home.
